Newcastle United finally won a trophy when they defeated Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, and Eddie Howe should be properly backed in the transfer market.
The Magpies are sixth in the Premier League and within touching distance of a top-four finish. It would be an incredible achievement if Newcastle secure Champions League football next season.
The summer window could prove critical for the Magpies once again. They have one of the richest owners in the world, but due to the Premier League’s financial rules, they can’t spend money recklessly and may need to offload players yet again.
The Magpies could be looking to sign a new goalkeeper, a new centre-back, and a top-quality right winger this summer, and they are reportedly checking on several options.
Newcastle need to sign a top goalkeeper. Nick Pope has a contract at St James’ Park until 2026, and the Magpies need an upgrade over him for the first-choice role.
Likewise, Martin Dubravka may not be willing to accept roles on the bench if he gets an offer from Middle-East clubs, while other backup keepers like John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos aren’t good enough to start in the Premier League.
According to a report from the Sunday Mirror (23 March, page 79), Newcastle are one of the clubs tracking Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
He is regarded as one of the world’s “outstanding” young prospects. Although he has played less than 50 games, a host of clubs are vying for his signature.
Newcastle could face competition from the two Manchester clubs, West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers or even Arsenal, for the 22-year-old shot-stopper.
He has a commanding presence and the ability to pass the ball out from the back with both feet, which is why Royal Antwerp believe he is worth £30m.
Newcastle were close to securing a deal for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford last summer, but the deal didn’t materialise.
The Magpies are likely going to try again to sign the 22-year-old keeper, who has continued to impress with the Championship club.
Trafford has tremendous potential and could be a terrific signing for Newcastle, but it will become difficult to lure him away if Burnley secure promotion to the Premier League.
