Welcome to the end of season 2023/24 Newcastle United awards.
Awards voted for by nobody.
Instead, my decision was final.
Looking back at the best and worst of the past year.
Player of the year
Anthony Gordon (2nd Bruno, joint 3rd Fabian Schar and Alexander Isak)
Match of the year
4-1 v PSG (2nd Arsenal 1-0 at home, 3rd Villa away 3-1)
Most frustrating moment of the year
Finding out Sandro Tonali banned for 10 months (2nd Nick Pope injury, 3rd Liverpool fluking that 2-1 win at SJP)
Gutsy performance of the year
West Ham 4-3 at home (2nd PSG 1-1 away, 3rd Man City 1-0 win at home with Eddie Howe changing all 10 outfield players)
Most improved player
Anthony Gordon (2nd Lewis Hall, 3rd Lewis Miley)
Funniest moment
Sunderland.
The way their club handled this, was more than any of could have ever dreamt of. Agreeing to a rebranding of the Black Cats Bars to NUFC was mind blowing. Their owners and management clueless throughout – before, during and after the match.
The Sunderland team equally woeful, scared to try and get out of their own half.
Whilst the Sunderland fans embarrassed themselves as expected. All the talk of how they were going to humiliate NUFC and the Newcastle fans about the Saudi thing and then in the event having a flag display that looked like it had been drawn up by five year olds.
Best atmosphere
PSG home (2nd Arsenal home, 3rd Man U away in League Cup)
Most uplifting thing this season
Eddie Howe doing a great job in such difficult circumstances (2nd the vast majority of the NUFC fanbase accepting the reality and staying solidly behind Howe, 3rd No matter how many players missing, those on the pitch giving it their all)
Most depressing thing this season
Those Newcastle fans embarrassing themselves with over the top criticism of Eddie Howe and his team (2nd So many fine margins and such bad luck going against NUFC, 3rd The never ending attempts to keep the usual six controlling all the power and money and prevent others competing)
Goal of the season
So many contenders but Anthony Gordon at home to Arsenal, only from a yard out but the reaction…. (2nd Dan Burn header at home to PSG, 3rd Barnes winner in 4-3 against West Ham)
