Newcastle United may end up missing out on midfielder Jesse Lingard after Manchester United demanded a large loan fee.

That’s according to a recent report from The Athletic, who claims the English midfielder may be forced to try and find another destination before Monday’s transfer window deadline.

Following a prolonged period of being out of first-team contention, Lingard, 29, has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

After spending the second half of last season on loan with David Moyes at West Ham United, with his contract set to expire in the summer, this January presented a good opportunity for Lingard to move on.

Jesse Lingard enjoyed a successful loan spell with West Ham last season.

However, with just five days left before the window slams shut, Lingard will likely be left to sweat over whether or not a potential buyer can be found.

Newcastle United had emerged as a genuine candidate to offer the England international an escape from his United heartbreak, however, after struggling to agree a loan fee, it now appears the Magpies could walk away from the deal altogether.

Speaking recently about the prospect of his side bringing in new players this month, manager Eddie Howe, as quoted by MEN, said: “It’s been a slightly frustrating week for us in the transfer market.

“We obviously know we’re against a deadline, and everyone connected with the club is desperately trying to improve the squad. We’re working very hard behind the scenes, but it’s been a fruitless search this week.”
