Newcastle United could send shockwaves around Europe by signing Tottenham star Harry Kane amid some recent comments.

What’s the story?

The England striker was the subject of intense speculation during the course of the summer transfer window, with Manchester City said to be pushing for a big-money move.

However, a deal failed to materialise before the end of the deadline, and now, Darren Ambrose has suggested that the Magpies’ new owners could look to make a splash.

He said: “What about Harry Kane? Now I say this because, are Manchester City or Chelsea going to be paying £100m-£120m in the summer.

“I don’t think they are. I think (City) went to around £130m this summer, so Newcastle will. They will go £150m-£200m. Say Daniel Levy puts on another ridiculously high transfer fee that nobody else is going to pay and Newcastle say, ‘OK, there’s £150m’.

No chance!

“Who’s got more chance of winning a trophy at the moment? Tottenham or Newcastle right now? Everyone is going to say (Newcastle) now because they’re a project and they’ve got ambition.”

Statement signing

While at the moment a move for someone like Kane seems to be a very fanciful idea, as Ambrose says, Newcastle are in the position of being able to match the kind of ridiculous fees that someone like Daniel Levy would demand.

If the Spurs chairman sticks to his guns of wanting a fee well over the region of £100m, then PIF could make a real statement of their ambition by matching that and luring Kane to St James’ Park.

Clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City needed that first marquee signing to walk through the door – at the latter, the likes of Yaya Toure and David Silva were a couple of the key signings that really sparked their Premier League title-winning era.

If Newcastle are to do the same, they need a similar sort of acquisition to really sell the club to players around the world that they mean serious business.
