In a recent edition of the London Is Blue podcast, journalist Matt Law revealed that Newcastle United could move in for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah if the Blues decide to let him go this summer. It has been stated that the English talent has been told by the West London club that they want to sell him which could open the door for the Magpies to sign him before the end of this month.

Chalobah’s Decent Run Of Form In The Premier League Last Season

Chalobah was a solid presence at the centre of Chelsea’s backline in the previous campaign when he managed to put in a run of dominant displays in the Premier League. The 24-year-old made 34 appearances for the Blues last season, picking up five yellow cards in various competitions.

The English defensive ace was a reliable performer on the defensive third of the pitch based on his average of 1.2 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 2.2 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He was even tidy when distributing possession from the back after making 88.5% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).

His current deal at Chelsea will expire in 2028. Hence, Newcastle would find it difficult to sign him on the cheap during this summer transfer window.

Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Go For Chalobah?

Chalobah is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his side inside his half. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when the opposition are on the offensive.

The English talent can play his way out from the back as well. He mainly operates as a central defender but can even function as a right-back if asked to do so.

Chalobah has what it takes to fight for a regular starting spot in Eddie Howe‘s first XI at Newcastle United. Thus, it makes sense for the Magpies to go for him as he could help them challenge across all fronts over the next few years.
