According Luke Edwards of the Telegraph, Newcastle United are closing in on a deal to sign England international Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace.

The fee is said to be ‘well in excess’ of £60m, and, although negotiations are still ongoing, both clubs are confident that an agreement will be reached, with personal terms also not expected to be an issue,

The reported price-tag would see Palace make a substantial profit on the £20m they signed Guéhi for from Chelsea in July 2021.

Since making that move from his boyhood side, the 24-year-old had been a crucial figure at Selhurst Park from the center of defence, making 98 premier League appearances and occasionally captaining the side under Patrick Vieira, Roy Hodgson, and latterly Oliver Glasner.

Those performances have earned him multiple call-ups to the England national side, six of which came at the recent European Championships. Guéhi was essentially the replacement for the injured England stalwart Harry Maguire, and, despite being suspended for the quarter-final tie against Switzerland, was arguably one of Southgate’s best performers throughout the tournament – standing out in a back-line with names such as John Stones, Kyle Walker, and his possible teammate Kieran Trippier.

As such, although already securing a replacement in €15m signing of Chadi Riad from Real Betis, the Englishman will be a significant loss for Palace, but a valuable addition to The Magpies.

Having already signed Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer, and made permanent last year’s loan deal for Chelsea’s Lewis Hall, the deal for Guéhi will see Eddie Howe’s further a defence that struggled with multiple injuries last season, as they look to improve upon their seventh place league finish last season and re-qualify for European football once again.
