Newcastle United should be in pole position for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo if they can move swiftly and agree a price with the Bees, according to the Telegraph.
The Magpies want to bring the Cameroon international to St James’ Park, and a fee of around £60 million is expected to secure the deal, but they face competition from Manchester United.
Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell is determined to make at least one key signing before he steps down at the end of June.
He has not made a first-team signing in the ten months he has been in charge of recruitment, and landing Mbeumo could be a massive coup.
The club want to sign a right-sided forward and a striker to play alongside Alexander Isak this summer.
The 25-year-old fits the bill after weighing in with 20 goals and seven assists in 38 Premier League appearances this season.
Securing Champions League football for next season is a major boost for Newcastle, and they need quality depth in attack to impress across all competitions.
Mbeumo played as a right winger and number nine for Brentford this term, proving his quality after notching 18 goals and 14 assists across the previous two league campaigns.
His strengths include taking set pieces, finishing, crossing, playing through balls, and making key passes, and he has what it takes to improve the Magpies in the final third.
Finishing fifth and securing a spot in the league phase of the elite European competition means Newcastle will be able to hold on to Isak following his return of 23 Premier League goals this term.
Adding Mbeumo to their attack could help them mount a challenge for the title next season.
