In a recent report, Calciomercato claimed that Newcastle United are leading the race to land Atalanta ace Ederson. It is understood that the Magpies are in pole position along with Tottenham Hotspur but are set to face competition from Juventus in the race to land the Brazilian midfielder this summer.

Ederson’s Impressive Form In Serie A This Season

Ederson is having a solid campaign at the Italian club after putting in a string of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The Brazilian talent has netted six goals and grabbed one assist in 35 matches for Atalanta this season in various competitions.

The 24-year-old has been a positive influence in both halves as he is averaging 2.6 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 0.9 clearances, 1.1 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A. He has even been careful when distributing the ball from midfield based on his pass success rate of 83.8% in the Italian top flight (stats via whoscored).

Ederson is under contract at the Serie A club until the summer of 2026 which could make it tough for the Magpies to recruit him on a cut-price deal later this year.

Is Ederson A Decent Choice For Newcastle United?

Ederson is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to make some important interceptions for his side at the centre of the park. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the offensive and can strike the ball with venom from long range.

The Brazilian midfield ace can even create some decent plays for others around him in the final third and can make some energetic runs with the ball from midfield. He mainly plays as a box-to-box midfielder but can also operate in the number ten position or act as a defensive midfielder if needed.

Ederson will undoubtedly add more quality to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s midfield. He has what it takes to earn a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park in the coming seasons. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in England.
