Newcastle made a tough start to this campaign as they couldn’t find a way to beat teams in the Premier League. They were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Burnley on penalties.

The Magpies finally managed to pick up the first victory of their season back in December when they got revenge on the Clarets by beating them in the league. However, at the turn of the year, the Tyneside giants found themselves in 19th place. With a potential relegation battle looming on the horizon, they were also knocked out of the FA Cup after a humiliating 1-0 loss at the hands of Cambridge United at St. James’ Park.

After a change of ownership, Newcastle decided to invest in some new players during the January transfer window. The recruitment of Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimares and Chris Wood gave them the lift they needed to transform their league form. The Magpies had a great second half to this campaign and managed to finish it with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Burnley last weekend which ensured them an 11th place finish in the league standings.

Newcastle’s Best Players Of The 2021-22 Campaign

Joelinton

The Brazilian talent was a regular feature of the Newcastle midfield and was arguably one of Eddie Howe’s most reliable performers on the field. Joelinton proved his worth by averaging 2.1 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 1.3 clearances, 1.3 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football (stats via whoscored).

Bruno Guimaraes

The 24-year-old was one of Howe’s January signings and seems to be the best one of the bunch. He made himself a key member of Newcastle’s midfield and deserves credit for scoring five goals and securing one assist in 17 league matches this season.
