Newcastle are reportedly ready to battle Benfica for the signing for Freiburg sensation Robin Koch.
Despite Newcastle’s proposed takeover by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund falling through, the club are still on the hunt for new additions this summer.
One of those, according to Portuguese paper Record, is Koch, who the Magpies are set to bid for in the coming weeks.
Benfica have apparently been in negotiations with the central defender for some time now, but Steve Bruce’s side are ready to swoop in at the 11th hour and make him one of their highest-paid players.
Bruce bemoaned Newcastle’s lack of defensive options on several occasions last season and sees signing a new centre-back as priority number one – no matter who the owners are.
