Newcastle United’s senior players have broken their silence following Alexander Isak’s request to explore a summer move, with the Swedish striker absent from the club’s pre-season tour in Asia.

The Magpies touched down in Singapore this week ahead of their friendly against Arsenal on Sunday, but the main talking point remained back home on Tyneside, where Isak has stayed behind due to what the club insist is an injury issue.

Midfielder Bruno Guimarães and defender Dan Burn, both part of the club’s leadership group, addressed the situation in front of the local media.

Speaking to The Straits Times, Guimarães played down the uncertainty surrounding Isak’s future but acknowledged the forward’s importance to the team.

“We all know the situation behind him, but it's not for me to speak about him. It is something that the club will take care of,” the Brazilian said.

“We want to keep our best players. What I want to say is that, I don't know what this club is seeing, but for us he's not here because he's in treatment in Newcastle.”

Burn, meanwhile, admitted the news of a potential exit had affected the squad, who are looking to regroup after a heavy 4-0 loss to Celtic.

“I think if we lost any player it would upset a sort of tight-knit group that has been together for sort of two or three years now. So yeah, obviously if any player leaves it does not help,” Burn said.

“But from our point of view we just sort of control what we can control.

“It’s a question for Alex to answer. He's obviously a big player for us, but we do have a lot of quality in the squad as well. Bringing Anthony (Elanga) in as well, which I think was a great signing.”

Isak’s future has become the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks, with Premier League rivals Liverpool among the clubs reportedly monitoring his situation. Despite having three years left on his current deal, the 24-year-old is believed to have raised concerns about his role and future at the club.

Bruno, who joined the Magpies from Lyon in 2022, offered some insight into his personal relationship with Isak and stressed that the club ultimately holds the power when it comes to the striker's future.

“I’m really close to him. He’s a good guy. He’s been through some rough things at this moment. My focus is with the lads. Isak is something I cannot control. The club has control of it,” he said.

“I hope he’s going to be fit when we come back to Newcastle to prepare for the new season.

“They told us he was there in Newcastle because of his injury. Of course, he’s a top player for us, and he’s going to be a miss on this trip. We need him ready as soon as possible.”

The Brazilian also reaffirmed his own long-term commitment to the club and spoke of his ambition to win silverware with the Magpies.

“Since I signed for the club I’ve always had this ambition (to compete). If I lose it, I’ll go back to Brazil and play there! I think the club has the same ambition as me,” Bruno said.

With the saga surrounding Isak continuing to unfold, Newcastle fans will be hoping the club can provide clarity on his future before the start of the new Premier League campaign. For now, the focus remains on preparations in Singapore, where Eddie Howe’s side will look to bounce back from their Celtic defeat in a high-profile friendly against Arsenal.
