Newcastle United are likely to be without Matt Ritchie for a sustained period of time with the Scottish winger needing to undergo an operation.

The 31-year-old injured his shoulder during a collision with Matt Doherty in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Manager Steve Bruce has confirmed Ritchie will need an operation and will likely miss the rest of the first half of the season.

Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle, Bruce said: “He will probably have an operation today.

“It’s a similar operation to Fabian Schar’s.

“How unfortunate are we to have two?

“We know how valuable he is around the training ground.

“He has that leadership about him. With any good player he’ll be a miss.”

Newcastle will head to Wales without Ritchie on Wednesday aiming to book their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals by beating Newport County.
