Paris Saint-Germain failed in their pursuit to sign Olympique Lyonnais’ Rayan Cherki (19) in the January transfer window, but they haven’t been deterred from making further advances. However, Newcastle United could prove a fierce competitor for the France U21 international’s signature, according to L’Équipe.

Cherki was one of many offensive targets for PSG during the winter window. However, in their pursuit to replace Pablo Sarabia, no replacement arrived, despite a late and unsuccessful attempt to secure a loan deal for Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech.

Cherki has a contract at Lyon that runs until 2025, and should Les Gones’ academy product make six more starts between now and the end of the season, he will trigger a one-year extension. However, his signing is still a priority for Luís Campos, and a further approach is envisaged this summer. In January, Les Parisiens were willing to offer over €20m; it remains to be seen how high PSG will go with their offer.

Competition could drive up the price this summer, and competition is expected. According to L’Équipe, big clubs in England and Germany are tracking the playmaker. Notably, Newcastle are interested in the player and even made enquiries this winter without going further.

However, the Magpies could return for Cherki this summer. Currently, Cherki may not be interested in a move to the North of England, but Newcastle’s interest could at the very least drive up the price.
