Newcastle release £20m signing Callum Wilson, he’s one Brendan might like | OneFootball

Not too recently we were linked to experienced English Premier League striker Dominic Calvert Lewin who was released by Everton, but it’s a move that remains rather unlikely to say the least.

However it could well be a different story for a man who has just been made available on a free, and similar to Calvert Lewin is a player who has bags of experience playing at the top level of English football, and an impressive scoring ratio to boot.

It’s not a rumour, more of an opinion, but that man would be England international Callum Wilson who has years of experience in the EPL with both Bournemouth and Newcastle United, but is now being freed by the latter after his contract came to an end.

Even at 33, and a few injury concerns last season, Callum would be a top notch acquisition to bolster our forward line for a season or two. He’s a player who’s been playing at the highest level for the past decade, he’s been scoring goals at the highest level both at club and international level.

Wilson scored 49 goals in 130 appearances for Newcastle, so no wonder the club who visit Celtic Park a week on Saturday, thanked the 33-year-old for playing a “huge part in our success in recent years”.

Callum Wilson issued his own statement to officially say his goodbyes to the Magpies.

“To all you Magpies, it’s time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years at the Toon. Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.”

Apparently a number of Premier League clubs have shown an interest in signing Wilson, while he also has options in Major League Soccer. However the chance to play Champions League football at this late stage of his career might be particularly appealing for the veteran striker who remains very much in demand.

Wilson signed for Newcastle from Bournemouth for a fee of £20m back in 2020 and spent an five years on Tyneside, where he had to contend with his fair share of injury worries. But he’s fully fit now and will provide a valuable stop-gap to a decent club in need of a striker.

I can’t think of a better option than Celtic. Worth a punt given the quality and experience that he’d bring to Paradise.
