Newcastle are prepared to offer Jacob Murphy a contract extension at St James’ Park as his current deal winds down.

The 25-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the season, making him a lucrative option on a pre-contract in January.

Rangers have been closest linked with a move for Murphy but it appears the Magpies are now going to make moves to keep him at the club.

That’s according to Football Insider, who state that Steve Bruce has been impressed with the former Norwich City man and believes he merits an extension.

While he has failed to justify the £10 million fee that was paid for him when he arrived from Carrow Road, he has made the most of his opportunities this season.

Murphy has even filled in at right-back, showcasing his versatility, as well as stepping in further forward for Ryan Fraser and Matt Ritchie when they have been sidelined with injury.

He has made a total of five Premier League appearances this season, including four starts.
