Eddie Howe will surely be elated with this news as it shows that the club are looking to bring in a proven player with bags of Premier League experience to bolster his squad.

Wijnaldum has over 200 games in the English top-flight under his belt and knows exactly what it takes to perform at this level, whereas a player coming into England for the first time would be more of a gamble.

He played 40 games for the Magpies in his only season on Tyneside and produced a stunning 11 goals and five assists from midfield. The ex-PSV man then played 237 matches for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, winning the Premier League and the Champions League during his time at Anfield.

This shows off his vast experience in the Premier League and illustrates why Howe would be delighted to have him in his team in the second half of the season. He is a top-quality midfielder and is capable of delivering consistent performances, with a career average WhoScored rating of 6.89 across 370 matches proving this.

Former Liverpool forward Ryan Babel once heaped praise on the Dutchman, saying: “I have no words for Gini’s performances and quality. He’s an incredible person. His energy is incredible, he has lungs for days. You can tell when he has the confidence, he’s really unbeatable and very hard to play against.”

Furthermore, speaking a few years back, Toon legend Alan Shearer hailed the Dutch gem as “absolutely sensational.”

This deal could also make a lot of sense for the Magpies from a financial point of view. Signing him on loan with an obligation to sign him permanently if they remain in the Premier League means that they will not be burdened by his wages if they do end up heading down to the second tier, whilst it still secures his services in the long-term if they do have a successful end to the campaign.

It is now down to the club to ensure that they are able to get this move over the line to improve the squad and bolster their chances of survival.
