Ipswich Town have done some impressive transfer business already this month but you wouldn’t bet against Mark Ashton splashing a bit more cash before the January window closes.

The signings of midfielder Massimo Luongo, right-sided defender Harry Clarke, and forward duo Nathan Broadhead and George Hirst all look like solid additions to Kieran McKenna’s squad.

A strong winter window could prove the difference in the race for League One promotion – with Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday, and Plymouth Argyle involved in a tight battle for the two automatic spots.

It’s hard to pick out too many areas where Ipswich are short but the squad could be strengthened and here are two realistic signings they should look to make before the window closes…

Elliot Anderson

Eddie Howe has reiterated that he doesn’t want to see 20-year-old Elliot Anderson depart this month but things can change quickly in the January window.

The attacking midfielder tore up League Two while on loan in the second half of last season and is the sort of talent that could end up proving the difference for Ipswich this season.

McKenna’s team have controlled games but at times lacked someone to produce that moment of magic to turn one point into three.

Anderson did that time and time again for Rovers last season. He may not be available at the moment but were that to change later in the window due to a new arrival at St James’ Park, he would make a fantastic signing for Ipswich.

There are similiarities between the way Newcastle and Ipswich play so Portman Road could make sense as a destination.

Real Fake

Silko Thomas

Chelsea 18-year-old Silko Thomas is currently on trial at Sheffield United ahead of a potential move but with the Blades under an EFL embargo, Ipswich could swoop in and hijack the deal.

The teenager is a wide player that would be best suited for a wing-back role and could be one for the future for the Tractor Boys.

New arrival Harry Clarke should offer cover for Wes Burns this term but landing Thomas could ensure that a progression plan is in place.

Many of Ashton’s signings have been done in the hope of securing short-term success but that is what would make landing the Chelsea youngster all the more impressive.

It would show that the Tractor Boys are also focussed on long-term success and could prove a masterstroke futher down the line.

With United under an embargo, there is an opportunity for someone to capitalise.
