Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is a ‘big admirer’ of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and he could make a statement by tempting the Everton striker to St James’ Park, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

With Sven Botman on his way to Tyneside, after a £35million deal was agreed with Lille, the Magpies may now turn their attentions towards Calvert-Lewin ahead of the upcoming season.

What’s the latest news involving Calvert-Lewin?

It was reported before the 2021/22 campaign reached its climax that Newcastle were set to launch an offer for Calvert-Lewin during the summer.

Although the Magpies have not tested Everton’s resolve with a big-money bid yet, Football Insider have revealed preliminary talks have been held with the 25-year-old.

The report suggests Calvert-Lewin, an 11-cap England international, has been added to Howe’s list of targets as he looks to recruit an elite centre forward capable of scoring more than 20 goals each season.

It emerged in March that Everton were ready to cash-in on their star, leading to Arsenal and West Ham United being put on red alert.

However, suitors will have to spend big as the Toffees have still slapped a £60million price tag on Calvert-Lewin.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about Calvert-Lewin?

O’Rourke understands Howe, who was appointed as Newcastle’s head coach last November, is a huge fan of Calvert-Lewin.

The journalist believes the Everton man would be an impressive addition to the squad at St James’ Park, particularly after the Magpies have seemingly given up in their attempts to sign Hugo Ekitike from Reims.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “He is somebody that Eddie Howe is a big admirer of so, if Newcastle were able to do a deal for Calvert-Lewin, I’m sure he would be a big, big signing for Newcastle.

“I’m sure Everton will be working hard to try and convince Calvert-Lewin to stay at Goodison Park, but I think Calvert-Lewin, once he’s back to full fitness, could be a great signing for Newcastle.”

Would Calvert-Lewin want to join Newcastle?

Although preliminary talks were held with Calvert-Lewin, it is understood that his preference was to secure a move to Arsenal rather than heading for Tyneside.

However, securing a big-money switch to the Emirates Stadium now appears unlikely as Gabriel Jesus is in the process of joining the Gunners after a £45million deal was struck with Manchester City,

That could open the door for Newcastle and, with them now being the richest club in world football thanks to a £305million takeover led by the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund last October, Calvert-Lewin may see linking up with Howe’s charges as a more attractive proposition.
