Having played for both of the big North East clubs during his career, you’d expect Louis Saha’s loyalties to be divided.
But you’d be wrong.
Saha made 11 appearances for the Magpies when he went on loan to St James’ Park from Metz in 1999.
And then much later in his career – following spells at Fulham, Manchester United, Everton and Tottenham – the Frenchman moved to the Stadium of Light, where he made a total of 14 appearances before terminating his contract in January 2013 and leaving without scoring a single goal.
But though his stint at Newcastle was equally brief, the circumstances of his departure from Sunderland means the 41-year-old knows who he would root for in the Tyne-Wear derby.
“I had a better experience at Newcastle,” Saha told Four Four Two when asked where his allegiance lies.
“I didn’t play at Sunderland – I didn’t like what happened to me in terms of chances I had there.”
There we go then.
That said, we imagine he doesn’t feel strongly enough to get the Newcastle crest tattooed on his torso anytime soon.
