Newcastle United are one of the clubs who ‘have got an eye’ on Chelsea attacking midfielder Mason Mount, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Magpies have defied expectations so far this season and are firmly in the race for a top-four finish, meaning their ambitious owners may be able to attract a higher calibre of player.

According to 90min, Chelsea are ‘yet to find an agreement’ over a new contract with Mount while his existing £76,000-per-week deal is due to expire in the summer of 2024.

It’s believed that both parties are eager to reach an agreement over fresh terms but the England international wants his new contract to reflect his status as a starter for both club and country.

And although Mount may not be enjoying one of his most productive campaigns this time around, he showed his top-class potential throughout last term.

In 53 appearances across all competitions, the 24-year-old registered 13 goals and 16 assists, helping Chelsea reach the finals of both domestic cups, leading to his being labelled "unbelievable".

Whether Newcastle can take advantage of his contract situation remains to be seen, but he would surely be a valuable asset for Eddie Howe to call upon should he make the switch to Newcastle.

What has Jones said about Mount?

When asked about Liverpool’s reported interest in Mount, Jones disclosed that they are far from the only potential suitors for the creative talent.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “I don't necessarily think there's just one other club interested in Mount.

“Liverpool are the most high-profile ones watching this situation. I know Newcastle are another club that have got an eye on him.”

Do Newcastle need Mount?

Newcastle have made several exciting acquisitions since the Saudi-backed consortium bought the club from Mike Ashley back in October 2021.

However, Bruno Guimaraes is the only central midfielder who has been welcomed to St. James’ Park since then, meaning it is an area of the pitch that Howe may look to strengthen soon.

Joelinton has been transformed into a highly-effective box-to-box dynamo, but apart from the two Brazilians, there is perhaps a lack of strength in depth.
