Newcastle United making Lille striker Jonathan David a target is something transfer insider Dean Jones is refusing to rule out.

The Tyneside club have had no success with bringing in a centre-forward yet this summer, and Jones is now wondering if they could turn to David.

What is the latest news involving David?

David is currently being linked to one of Newcastle’s Premier League rivals, Manchester United.

According to the i, the Red Devils sent scouts to go watch the 22-year-old at the end of last season.

Overall, the 2021/22 campaign was a good one for David, who scored 15 goals in 38 Ligue 1 appearances for Lille.

The Canadian has also started this season strongly, scoring two goals and providing two assists in his first two games.

If he is to leave the Stade Pierre-Mauroy this summer, it is believed that Lille value him at around €50m (£42.2m).

What has Jones said about David and Newcastle?

Hugo Ekitike and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are two forwards who have reportedly been on Newcastle’s radar this transfer window. However, with the Magpies failing to sign either, Jones wonders if they will now consider a move for someone like David.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT about Eddie Howe’s striker search, the journalist said: “I do wonder if they might go for Jonathan David or somebody like that if these ones don’t work out.

“I think he’ll probably be a bit more expensive, but there’s obviously a mould that they’re trying to fit in within Newcastle, but also they don’t want to spend that much money if they do end up splashing out.”

Should Newcastle make David a target?

Yes. David is a striker who looks like he could make an impact at St James’ Park now and in the future given his age.

As already highlighted, his goal record last season was pretty good, while his numbers the campaign prior were not terrible either. In 37 Ligue 1 appearances, the former Gent man scored 13 times.

Speaking in more detail about what David brings to the pitch, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry told CBS Sports (via HITC): “If he sees the centre-back dropping, then he will go in behind. But as soon as he sees there is a gap, he will run and he is also pretty strong too and he loves contacts.”
