Jurgen Klopp recently sparked widespread debate in the football world after he said in a press conference that three clubs “have no ceiling” thanks to the vast wealth of their owners.
The German was alluding to the three state owned clubs operating in European football right now: Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and more recently Newcastle.
And stated that Liverpool simply cannot compete with the financial might of the rich institutions.
Speaking in a press conference prior to the weekend's Premier League clashes getting underway, Klopp was asked how Liverpool could keep pace with City.
"You will not like the answer, and you all have the answer already," Klopp answered. "Nobody can compete with City. You have the best team in the world, and you put in the best striker on the market.
"No matter what it costs, they just do it. I know City will not like it, nobody will like it. Liverpool can not act like them. It's not possible.
"It's just clear. There are three clubs in world football that can do what they want, financially. It's legal and everything, fine. But it's a fact.
"It's not a problem at all for me, it is what it is. But don't ask me that question. You all should know it, it's not possible to deal with that, and it will be like this.
"I hear now at Newcastle they said, 'there's no ceiling for this club'. He's absolutely right, there's no ceiling for Newcastle. Congratulations, some other clubs have ceilings."
Whether you agree or not, it's certainly a very interesting take and it's hard to dismiss the claims that it's incredibly difficult for most clubs to keep pace against owners with such deep pockets.
If Liverpool - who by all means are still a very rich club - sign a player for £50 million and it goes wrong, it's undoubtedly a huge blow.
Whereas for someone like Man City, they could go and drop £70 million on the next star and the next star, until they get the right formula.
Therefore, competing with the super-rich demands perfection in the transfer market, a place where Liverpool have enjoyed great success in recent times.
But based on the way the 2022/23 season has started for the club, it looks like they're finally feeling the strain as Man City exert their dominance over the league ever more.
