Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly working on a deal to sign Celta Vigo youngster Gabri Veiga ahead of a host of Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United.

Veiga had a terrific 2022/23 campaign with the Spanish side and is now attracting interest across Europe.

He has a €40million (£34.6million) release clause in his contract, which obviously makes him a very desirable player.

Newcastle, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are four Premier League clubs believed to be interested in signing the 21-year-old midfielder, who scored 11 goals in 36 La Liga matches last term.

With lots of interest coming from the wealthy English sides, Ligue 1 champions PSG are reportedly working ‘quickly’ to win the race to sign the Spain Under-21 international.

According to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, PSG ‘have made good progress’ in their bid to sign Veiga, with a medical already booked, which displays their confidence.

Negotiations are now ‘advanced’ despite interest from the four Premier League teams mentioned, as well as Barcelona and Real Madrid.

PSG are hopeful Veiga’s medical will be passed by the end of the week, even though there does not appear to be an agreement in place with the French side and player, and Celta Vigo.

Incoming PSG manager Luis Enrique ‘knows Veiga well’ and there is a feeling the Parisiens will be able to win the race to sign the young playmaker.

Newcastle are in the market for a new attacking midfielder and have already missed out on James Maddison and Dominik Szobaszlai, who joined Tottenham and Liverpool, respectively.

Although Veiga is not as technically gifted as those two players, he has a better eye for goal and can operate as a second striker very effectively.

It is unclear whether or not Magpies boss Eddie Howe will turn his attention to Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby after missing out on Maddison, Veiga and Szoboszlai.

Diaby has been linked with Newcastle ever since they were bought by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in October 2021.

He has also been linked with a move to Arsenal and is expected to leave Leverkusen this summer, though nothing of note has been reported in recent weeks.
