Newcastle United have been linked with a surprise swoop for Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller.

What’s the story?

According to Sport BILD journalist Christian Falk, both Eddie Howe’s side and fellow Premier League outfit are interested in signing the German, whose contract with Bayern comes to an end in the summer of 2023.

Would kick-start PIF’s revolution

Having a winner’s mentality is often one of the under-appreciated aspects of the job description.

It’s the kind of attitude and hard-working approach that exists in only the very best players, and gives them the motivation to continue to strive to be the best. Muller’s work ethic is unparalleled, with even Jurgen Klinsmann hailing his commitment to cause, dubbing him as “remarkable”.

Those sentiments were echoed by former Germany boss Joachim Low, who of coursed managed Muller during Die Mannschaft’s World Cup triumph back in 2014.

He said: “He is mentally strong, a very smart player who always seems able to find space, but physically he is in great shape as well. He is the one who runs the most kilometres but he makes it look easy, even the heat doesn’t seem to affect him.”

That experience and know-how of playing in big games in pressure-cooker environments, would serve the club so well – the German has won an incredible 29 trophies in his time with Bayern and Germany.

While it may not be signing him in his prime, Muller remains a potentially huge coup for the Magpies if they can pull it off.

The £22.5m-rated star’s arrival would be a real statement of ambition, and be the big marquee name signing that could kick-start PIF’s revolution at St James’ Park.

Just like the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City have needed in the past, you need that first real eye-catching signing to send a message across the rest of the Premier League and Europe too.

Muller would certainly fit that bill as someone with his resume and could pave the way for some real high-profile transfer targets to follow him to Tyneside in the future.
