Newcastle have identified Wolfsburg’s Felix Nmecha as a potential alternative to Dominik Szoboszlai and James Maddison as the club target creative additions.

Nmecha could be available for around €25m and represents a cheaper option than top targets Szoboszlai and Maddison.

The Magpies are understood to have tracked Nmecha during the Bundesliga campaign and are considering a move for the 22-year-old, who made his senior debut for Germany in March.

Nmecha came through the academy system at Manchester City after relocating to England as a child, but made just two senior appearances before departing for Wolfsburg.

The attacking midfielder represented England up to u19 level before switching his international allegiance to Germany. Sky Germany are reporting that Borussia Dortmund are also interested in Nmecha, who scored three goals and provided five assists in 30 Bundesliga appearances last season.

According to the report, Newcastle’s top target remains RB Leipzig’s Szoboszlai, who has a release clause of €70m in his contract at the Bundesliga side.

Eddie Howe’s side also remain interested in a move for Leicester’s Maddison, having seen an offer turned down for the England midfielder last summer, but face competition from Tottenham for his signature.
