Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell pushed to hold talks to sign a West Ham United target despite Eddie Howe not being keen on the player, according to talkSPORT.

Mitchell, a former Monaco deal-maker, has taken Dan Ashworth’s job at St James’ Park and is getting stuck into the transfer window.

He showed interest in Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, who is also a target for West Ham.

Howe is not keen on landing Todibo, but Mitchell pushed ahead with talks anyway.

It appears that Howe can come out on top in the early power struggle with Mitchell as it is unlikely Newcastle will be taking their interest in Todibo further.

Nice are happy to sell the defender this summer and the player would prefer a move to Italian giants Juventus.

Newcastle will hope that Howe and Mitchell are on the same page when it comes to future transfer targets this summer.
