Newcastle are not planning to resurrect their pursuit of Roma goalkeeper Pau López when the transfer window reopens, according to reports in Italy.

Following Martin Dúbravka’s summer injury, the Magpies were left seeking another shot-stopper, with their hunt leading them to the Spaniard.

However, no move materialised and Newcastle ultimately ended up signing local lad Mark Gillespie, who returned to his boyhood club from Motherwell on a three-year deal.

Although he hasn’t quite convinced, Calciomercato claim that there will be no fresh assault from the Tynesiders on López during the winter window.

They cite one of the major factors being the performances of Karl Darlow, who has impressed Steve Bruce when called upon and he wants to keep the faith with the former Nottingham Forest man.

Roma are reportedly willing to offload López, who hasn’t hit anything close to the levels expected of him after arriving from Real Betis last year.

The inconsistent 25-year-old is eager to stay in the Italian capital and fight for his place though, despite losing the gloves to veteran Antonio Mirante.
