Newcastle United would have ‘no chance’ of signing Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison if he were to sign a new contract at the King Power Stadium, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Eddie Howe bolstered his squad during the summer transfer window, splashing over £120 million on recruits, but failed in his bid to sign a top target.

Downie understands that Newcastle would have no chance of signing Maddison if he were to agree new terms at the King Power.

The Sky Sports reporter told GIVEMESPORT: “If he does go on to sign a new contract at Leicester, you’ve got to say Newcastle have got no chance of getting him. Their only chance really of getting him would have been in that sort of cut-price deal [in the summer], and I’m saying cut-price deal, we’re talking over £40 million. He’s worth £50 million and that’s why I think Newcastle were kind of pleasantly surprised when they learned that they could get him for that money, but they couldn’t get him.”

Should Newcastle push again for Maddison?

There is no doubt that Howe is lacking some creative magic in the final third of the pitch at present.

In seven Premier League matches this season, Newcastle have scored just seven goals. Their last outing, a 1-1 draw with newly-promoted Bournemouth, saw them create just one big chance.

Last season, Maddison scored 12 goals and provide eight assists in the Premier League, taking his top-flight tally to 38 goals for the Foxes, making it clear he could prove a game-changer for Newcastle.
