Newcastle Go Backwards As They Fall 3-1 At Carrow Road

The worst possible outcome for Steve Bruce has happened after a thrashing at the hands of newly-promoted Norwich City. Newcastle showed no fight and were dominated by superior side today. They could not do anything about Teemu Pukki whose movement was sublime, and finishing clinical. His hat-trick sunk the lowly Magpies 3 goals to 1 at Carrow Road.

Newcastle came out with an unchanged side after their poor first half showing at Carrow Road. They started out a little better in the opening ten minutes or so as they had more of the ball. However, their final delivery was very poor.

They forced Tim Krul into a couple of good saves but the tide started to turn again after a very poor delivery by Matt Ritchie led to a Norwich counter. Norwich would maintain possession through the subsequent passage of play.

Teemu Pukki would get a chance from just inside the box and put it away for a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute.

Joelinton would come off for Yoshinori Muto after the goal, as he couldn’t shake off an earlier knock from a collision with Grant Hanley. It was a poor performance from Joelinton whose miss in the first half could have changed this game.

Newcastle would again fail to respond after conceding, and we saw no sense of urgency from the lads.

Ki would then come off for Sean Longstaff in the 75th minute after Newcastle had won a corner. Ki was also very poor today but this change would do nothing to help Newcastle’s cause.

They had no answer for the Finn Teemu Puuku. A pass from midfield split the Newcastle defense and a nicely worked move saw Pukki slide the ball past Dubravka just after Longstaff’s introduction. It was all over after that.

Steve Bruce– the Newcastle cauldron just go hotter

Jonjo Shelvey would get a late consolation goal but it was far too little too late.

We hoped to see improvement from Newcastle against Norwich, but we saw regression. This formation just does not work, and Bruce will have to work hard to figure something out.

However, these players lacked determination in what was a truly dismal performance. Two games in is not the time to panic, though there is much cause for concern after this display today.
