Neto would strengthen Newcastle’s attack and could replace Miguel Almiron, who is subject to interest from the Saudi Pro League.

However, the Portuguese international would likely cost upwards of £60 million, constituting a financial problem for a club struggling with Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) issues.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is a massive fan of Neto, and his pace, skill and playmaking ability would give his team another dimension in attack.

The Magpies will likely face competition for his signature, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur monitoring his progress.

Newcastle are also in the market for defensive reinforcements and have their sights set on Bournemouth centre-back Lloyd Kelly. He is a free agent this summer.

In more exciting news for Newcastle, the club has hired Odgers Berndtson to lead their search for a new sporting director.

They have already started contacting some of the top names in the business, even though they haven’t decided yet.

Former AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell is on their shortlist. He has experience in England, previously leading recruitment for Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur..

Mitchell also served as the technical director of Red Bull’s global football brand.

Brentford duo Phil Giles and Lee Dykes are also on Newcastle’s radar, while ex-Roma chief Tiago Pinto is available after recently leaving the club.
