Newcastle United will try and upgrade on Allan Saint-Maximin this summer and believe they can move “beyond him”, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.

The French winger has been one of the Tyneside club’s best performers since joining from Nice back in 2019, but his future is currently in doubt.

How has Saint-Maximin fared at Newcastle?

Saint-Maximin can be pleased with how things have gone for him at Newcastle following his arrival from Ligue 1.

He quickly became a fan favourite and has done his part to keep the Magpies in the Premier League.

This season, the 25-year-old has a WhoScored rating of 7.10, the second-highest score in Eddie Howe’s squad, while last term, he recorded an average of 7.12 after registering three goals and four assists to help his side to a 12th-placed finish.

From Newcastle’s perspective, though, a few goal contributions may no longer suffice, with the MailOnline claiming that they would be willing to sell the former Nice man this summer if an offer of £50m arrived.

What has Jones said about Newcastle and Saint-Maximin?

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that Newcastle could indeed look to move on from Saint-Maximin and bring in an upgrade once the transfer window is open.

Speaking to GMS, the football journalist said: “He’s one of those positions where they will look to upgrade – it’s a game-changing position. He’s been good; he’s been almost iconic at times for Newcastle. But such is their ambition that it’s time to move beyond him.”

What does Saint-Maximin have to do to save his Newcastle career?

As much as Newcastle supporters love Saint-Maximin, they will be the first to admit that his end product leaves much to be desired as they continue to watch him week in, week out.

It is an area of his game that needs work, with the £38,000-a-week attacker scoring just five league goals this season.

Retired striker Noel Whelan also feels that he tries to do too much at times. The ex-Leeds United player recently told Football Insider: “With Saint-Maximin, I think the problem with him is he knows that he’s their star player and he tries to do everything by himself.”

Ultimately, if Saint-Maximin can prove to Howe that he is capable of scoring more goals and delivering better final balls, then perhaps that could help prolong his stay at St James’ Park. But with only a few games left in this season, time is not on his side.
