Newcastle duo Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn say they hope “top striker” Alexander Isak will remain at the club.
Isak wants to explore his options this summer, with Liverpool among those interested in signing the Sweden international.
But the Magpies are reluctant to sell him this summer and would command a British record transfer fee to even consider doing so.
Speaking on Newcastle’s pre-season tour in Asia, which Isak is not taking part in due to what the club said is a minor injury, Guimaraes admits losing Isak would be a blow.
“Isak is a top striker,” he said. “I think his last season speaks for himself.
“He’s a top player but all I know is he stayed there (in England) because of his injury. He’s getting treatment from the club to get him ready.
“We know the situation behind him but it’s not for me to speak about him.
“It’s something that the club will take care of.
“We want to keep our best players. I don’t know what the club is seeing but for us it’s because of the treatment in Newcastle.”
Guimaraes’ team-mate Burn also says he is looking forward to Isak, hopefully, joining up with the rest of the squad again.
“Obviously he’s a big player but I do think we’ve got quality all over the field,” he said. “Hopefully he’ll be back training soon.
“Obviously it’s a tight knit group that’s been together two or three years now so any player that leaves, it doesn’t help but from our point of view we can just control what we can control and we’re looking forward to getting Alex back when he’s fit.”
Newcastle take on Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in Singapore on Sunday, before facing a K-League XI and then Tottenham in South Korea.
