Newcastle United have decided against appealing the red card received by Anthony Gordon during their FA Cup loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, according to Sky Sports.
As a result, the Newcastle forward will miss the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool (March 16), along with league fixtures against West Ham United and Brentford.
Gordon was sent off in the 83rd minute after shoving Brighton defender Jan Paul Van Hecke to the ground in frustration. Given the nature of the incident, an appeal always seemed unlikely to succeed, and Newcastle have now accepted the decision.
This is a double blow for Eddie Howe’s side, with fresh reports confirming that left-back Lewis Hall will also miss the final. The left-sided duo have been key components of the Newcastle set-up, and their absence will be a massive setback ahead of the showdown at Wembley.
Hall was to help keep the in-form Mohamed Salah in check, but Newcastle will have to find a new solution to contain the Egyptian forward.
Gordon has been a vital player for the Magpies this season, contributing six goals and five assists in the Premier League, along with two goals and an assist in the League Cup.
His partnership in attack with Alexander Isak has been instrumental, and his absence leaves a massive gaping hole in Newcastle’s attacking threat.
With no appeal forthcoming, Newcastle must now prepare for the final without two of their key men. Gordon’s suspension was avoidable, and his frustration has ultimately cost him and his team at a crucial point in the season.
Meanwhile, Hall’s absence only adds to the challenges facing Howe’s side as they look to bring home silverware.
Newcastle must dig deep and find solutions to overcome Liverpool at Wembley. The Magpies want to lift their first major domestic trophy since 1955. They will be determined to fulfil the mission they failed in 2023.
