Newcastle were dominant throughout, forcing Arsenal on to the back foot with their intensity but couldn’t find an opener to match it in the opening half.

They came closest through Allan Saint-Maximin, who brought an outstanding low save out of Aaron Ramsdale, although Arsenal’s injury issues came to the fore again when they lost Takehiro Tomiyasu before the break.

And things got even worse for the Gunners 10 minutes after half-time when a break down the left saw the ball centred for Callum Wilson but he failed to get to it before the returning Ben White inadvertently steered the ball into his own net.

Most frustrating of all for Mikel Arteta will be the fact that the goal came from a Nuno Tavares foul throw which was penalised.

But Newcastle made sure of a well-deserved victory with five minutes remaining when Bruno Guimarães pounced on a loose ball after a Ramsdale save to find the back of the net and leave Arsenal’s top four ambitions in serious jeopardy.

The result means that Spurs will need just a point on Sunday at Norwich to ensure that they pip their rivals to the final top four spot.
