Newcastle consider move for Lewis Hall – a risky idea for Chelsea

It’s the kind of rumour we can get behind – they need a left back and we’ve got too many, but want to see our academy teenager playing at as high a level as possible. Of course the last thing we want is Hall being sold permanently – we’ve seen enough academy talents let go this summer.
What’s risky about this potential move for Chelsea is how the power dynamic of this scenario has changed. A few years ago we would happily have loaned Hall out to the Magpies for development purposes, and wouldn’t have to worry about losing him.
But now things have changed. What if he goes there, does really well, plays in the Champions League and they qualify again this season? Then you have the possibility that he’s pushing to leave us and make that move permanent. He’d rather play in Europe with them than battle Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella (and possibly Ian Maatsen) to play for us.
On the basis of that risk, we actually rather loan him to a lesser team, knowing we’ll get him back.
