Newcastle have been dealt a blow with the news that striker Alexander Isak is unlikely to feature again this side of the World Cup.
The club record £63m summer signing from Real Sociedad was initially injured on international duty with Sweden, and has now suffered a fresh setback.
Speaking after the 0-0 at Manchester United on Sunday, Newcastle manager confirmed the disappointing injury news.
“Alex has re-injured his thigh. It’s a very similar injury to the first one that he picked up with Sweden,” Howe told reporters, per The Chronicle.
“He’s going to be out for a period of time – we probably won’t see him before the break for the World Cup.”
Howe also gave an update on winger Allan Saint-Maximin’s condition.
“Maxi has a very slight irritation of his hamstring,” he said.
“On its own, that would be very small and would probably just be a few days out, but the problem we have is that because it’s the third time he’s done it now, we’re going to have to be very careful with his return to play. That’s a blow.”
The Magpies will need other players to step up to the goalscoring plate when they visit Everton on Wednesday.
