Newcastle United have announced the signing of Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali in a deal that makes him the most expensive Italian player in history.
The deal is reported to be worth an initial €70m, equalling the club record fee Newcastle initially paid for Alexander Isak last summer. He has signed a contract until 2028.
Chelsea’s €57m signing of Jorginho in 2018 was previously the highest fee ever paid for an Italian.
Tonali leaves Milan after three seasons, in which time he made 130 appearances and scored seven goals, as well as helping the club land their first Serie A title in 10 years in 2021/22.
The 23-year-old has also represented his country, making 14 appearances for the Italian national team since his debut in 2019.
The midfielder, who made his breakthrough as a teenager at Brescia, is the first signing of what is sure to be a busy summer for Newcastle as they gear up for their first Champions League campaign in two decades.
