Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius is “on the verge” of a return to the Premier League with Newcastle United.

Karius has been a free agent since his Liverpool contract expired at the end of June and has been on the lookout for a new club, having previously spent time on loan at both Beşiktaş and Union Berlin.

An injury to Karl Darlow in training this week means Newcastle are desperately short of goalkeeping cover, after also allowing Martin Dubrávka to join Manchester United on deadline day.

And according to Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Karius is undergoing a medical at St James’ Park and is expected to sign a short-term deal soon.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper’s last game for Liverpool was the 2018 Champions League final, in which he committed two huge blunders in a 3-1 defeat for the Reds.

He played 67 times for Beşiktaş in a relatively successful two-year loan spell, but his 2020/21 season-long loan at Union Berlin yielded just five first-team appearances.
