Former Newcastle defender Gary Caldwell has made a key claim on Rangers manager Steven Gerrard…
The ex-Magpies player and coach has claimed that the Gers coach will be ‘in the frame’ to replace Steve Bruce at St. James’ Park.
Caldwell, who was recently the interim manager with the U23’s at Newcastle, believes that the ex-Liverpool man will be a contender to enter the hot seat as PIF’s first appointment.
“I think it’s a fantastic club, first and foremost, (it’s) where I started my career and I went back recently, and it’s still a great club.
“There was a lot of negativity because of the previous owner. Steve Bruce took a lot of flack in the first-team games I went to see, and really unfairly in my opinion.
“For a manager to get 1000 games in the modern day is an unbelievable achievement, but I agree that he will get sacked. It’s going to happen at some point.
“When it does, Steven Gerrard will be in the frame. I thought his comments were interesting.”

Newcastle fans will surely be left buzzing by these comments from Caldwell. The Scotsman could be speaking with a degree of knowledge on the situation, given that he was recently working inside the club, and he believes that Gerrard will be a serious contender to take the job.
This will delight the supporters as Gerrard is a young, up-and-coming, manager with a recent track record of success at Rangers. Therefore, he could excite fans more than a run-of-the-mill head coach who has been at several clubs doing a steady, if an uninspiring, job, for example.
Rangers won the Scottish Premiership title without losing a single match last season as they accrued 102 points. They ended Celtic’s dominance in Scotland as the Liverpudlian was able to lead his side to glory, conceding just 13 goals along the way to lifting the trophy.

At the age of 41, he has the potential to be the Newcastle manager for a long time and lead them into the new era under PIF. Taking a gamble on a young coach with promise could be more exciting for fans who want to see a continual progression and that is why they will be delighted by this claim from Caldwell on Gerrard’s future.
