Newcastle manager Rafael Benítez has urged critics to ‘read my quotes properly’ after coming under fire from pundits during the summer transfer window.

Since the Spaniard’s comments regarding a lack of funds given to him by Mike Ashley, the club ended the recruitment drive with seven new bodies – though Magpies boss was aided with loans and free transfers.

Some football pundits, including Richard Keys and Andy Gray, criticised Benítez’s outlook after the club had a busy end to the market.

However, the Newcastle coach defended himself and commented after Saturday’s defeat by Tottenham: “I’ve said that the squad is a little bit better. People need to read my quotes properly.

“We were bringing in players to improve the squad overall and it depends on the new additions if they can improve the starters. If they can do that we have a better team.

“The problem we have here is that all the other teams are improving. So we will see where we are.”
