Newcastle have confirmed their place in next season’s Champions League, despite falling to a deserved 1-0 defeat against Everton at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe’s men started the day in fourth and on track for a return to Europe’s top competition, but a nervy display had fans worried they might let it slip.

In a tense and scrappy affair, the hosts found it hard to carve out any real chances, while the visitors looked the more likely to score throughout.

The deadlock was broken midway through the second half when Carlos Alcaraz met Mykolenko’s cross with a superb header into the bottom corner, setting up a nervy finish.

Tension filled the stadium until word spread that Manchester United had taken the lead against Aston Villa - a result that would secure Newcastle’s qualification - prompting huge celebrations in the stands.

It marks the end of a brilliant season for the Magpies, who also ended a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy with the Carabao Cup title.
