Newcastle have emerged as a “frontrunner” to host one of England’s pre-Euro 2024 friendlies.
According to the Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, St James’ Park could host one of the two fixtures that Gareth Southgate’s side will undertake ahead of the tournament.
The Magpies’ home last hosted its national team game in March 2005, where Sven-Göran Eriksson’s side defeated Azerbaijan 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier.
It was one of eight venues used for Euro 96 and is set to be used again in 2028, when England will host the tournament alongside Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Opposition for the warm-up games have yet to be announced but Newcastle trio Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon and Callum Wilson will be hoping to be involved if they make the Three Lions’ squad.
Earlier this week, the club’s CEO Darren Eales revealed that they are currently exploring all avenues over St James’ potential redevelopment to increase its capacity beyond 52,000.
