Newcastle and Tottenham are set to battle it out to sign Genoa forward Albert Gudmundsson this summer.
The Iceland international has been in brilliant form for Genoa since the club’s return to Serie A this season, scoring nine league goals and leading the division for chances created.
Gudmundsson came close to a move to Fiorentina in the January transfer window, though the deal fell through as Genoa held out for their €30m (£25.6m) asking price for the 26-year-old.
The collapse of that transfer has allowed Premier League clubs to enter the race and Calciomercato claim Newcastle and Spurs are both chasing a summer deal.
Newcastle are keen to add another option to their forward line with Callum Wilson linked with an exit, while Spurs are continuing to rebuild under Ange Postecoglou.
Gudmundsson, who can play as a forward or in an attacking midfield role, has scored 26 goals in 71 appearances since signing for Genoa from AZ Alkmaar. He provided 15 goals and assists as Genoa were promoted last season and led Serie B for progressive carries.
He has since impressed in the top tier with a number of eye-catching performances for Alberto Gilardino’s side, who sit comfortably in mid-table on their return to the division.
