There were seven Premier League fixtures taking place on Saturday. Here’s what went down.

Newcastle United v Arsenal

Scorers: Gordon 64′.

Anthony Gordon scored a controversial winner as Newcastle ended Arsenal’s unbeaten run in a fiery clash at St.James’ Park.

The Gunners taste defeat in the league for the first time since May in a game that was short on goalmouth action but full of incident.

Both teams had cases for believing the other should’ve been reduced to 10-men in the first half with Kai Havertz receiving only yellow for a late challenge on Sean Longstaff on the byline.

Arsenal then felt aggrieved that Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães escaped red despite appearing to strike Jorginho with his forearm.

Referee Stuart Attwell may be asked further questions about those incidents in the coming days but it is VAR who will receive most of the attention once again after the incidents surrounding the winning goal.

Jacob Murphy’s wild attempt was picked up at the byline by Joe Willock who crossed over David Raya into the box and on to the head of Joelinton before the ball bounced for Gordon to poke home from on the goal-line.

A lengthy VAR check looked at whether the ball had gone out of play and also if Joelinton had pushed Gabriel over in the build-up to the goal.

But Gordon’s strike stood and Newcastle move to within three points of the top four after extending their unbeaten run to seven games.

Doku delivers as City hammer Cherries

Scorers: Doku 30′, Silva 33′, 83′ Akanji 37′, Foden 63′, Aké 88′; Sinisterra 74′

Jérémy Doku had a hand in five goals, assisting four and scoring the other, as Manchester City thrashed Bournemouth 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.

After an Erling Haaland header hit the post against a Bournemouth side set up very deep in their own half, City finally broke their resistance on the half-hour mark through man of the match Doku, who found the corner in slick fashion after a perfect one-two with Rodri for a finish which opened the floodgates.

Things quickly got better for the home side through Bernardo Silva, who swept into the corner after some delightful Doku footwork and the Belgian then contributed to his third goal in the space of seven minutes moments later when his shot found the corner via the help of a deflection from Manuel Akanji, who claimed it.

Dominic Solanke almost pulled one back for the Cherries immediately after the restart but his strike was ruled out and he was frustrated again shortly afterwards when the woodwork denied him.

Doku then claimed his third assist of the afternoon with a fantastic pass to set up Phil Foden to make it 4-0 before Bournemouth did finally get the goal their second half efforts merited through a Luis Sinisterra consolation.

But City, and Doku, ensured they would have the last laugh by adding a fifth through Silva, with the summer signing again providing the pass to make it four assists for the afternoon, before Nathan Aké joined in on the party against his former club to help send his side back to the top of the table.

Maupay drought ends in Bees win

Scorers: Maupay 11′, Mavropanos OG 55′, Collins 69′; Kudus 19′, Bowen 25′

Brentford got the better of West Ham in a back-and-forth affair to take all three points with a nail-biting 3-2 win.

The home side opened the scoring on 11 minutes when Neal Maupay finally broke his long goal drought by nodding home from close range after poor West Ham defending to net for the first time in 14 months and 35 games.

But the Hammers restored parity shortly afterwards through a sublime acrobatic volley from Mohammed Kudus before he inadvertently helped his side hit the front when his chested effort came back off the post and was guided in by Jarrod Bowen to become the first Premier League player ever to score in his team’s first six away games of the campaign.

West Ham’s problems in maintaining a lead came to the fore again 10 minutes after half-time when a Bryan Mbeumo delivery from the left caused problems at the heart of the defence and led to Konstantinos Mavropanos heading into his own net.

Nathan Collins then won it for the Bees with his first goal for the club with what was essentially a repeat of the second goal as he thumped home a header following another cross from the right.

With the victory, Brentford leapfrog the Hammers into ninth.

Frustration for Everton

Scorers: Mykolenko 7′; Young OG 84′

A late own goal saw Brighton rescue a point from their trip to Everton in a 1-1 draw at a rainy Goodison Park.

Fresh from their win at West Ham last weekend and an EFL Cup victory, Vitaliy Mykolenko put Everton ahead after just seven minutes when he thrashed in a deflected effort at the near post after his initial attempt was saved.

Brighton almost registered a swift response when Lewis Dunk volleyed home magnificently via the underside of the crossbar, only for the effort to be disallowed following a lengthy VAR check.

That looked like it would sum up a frustrating outing on a Merseyside until Kaoru Mitoma’s late cross was deflected into the net off Ashley Young as the Seagulls escaped with a share of the spoils which moves them up to sixth, while the Toffees edge six points clear of the relegation places.

Blades pick up first win

Scorers: Archer 72′, Norwood (PEN) 90+10′; Bellegarde 89′

Sheffield United picked up their first win of the season in dramatic fashion thanks to a penalty 10 minutes into injury-time to overcome Wolves 2-1.

Luck hasn’t been in great supply at Bramall Lane this season but the Blades finally had fortune go their way in the closing stages when a lucky break of the ball sent Cameron Archer scampering through on goal and his early attempt crashed in from 25 yards via the underside of the bar.

Tantalisingly close to their first win, the Blades then shipped a last minute equaliser in heartbreaking fashion as Jean-Ricner Bellegarde fired into the top corner from just inside the area.

However, the drama wasn’t finished there and in an incredible conclusion, United were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time which captain Oliver Norwood stepped up to score in the 100th minute of action and send the home support wild as they finally got off the mark, although they do remain bottom of the table.

Palace see off Burnley

Scorers: Schlupp 22′, Mitchell 90+5′

Crystal Palace left Turf Moor with all three points as Eberechi Eze made his return in the 2-0 win.

Burnley endured a disastrous opening quarter when they fell behind to a Jeffrey Schlupp goal, while also having big red card appeals against Odsonne Édouard waved away.

Sam Johnstone was called upon in the closing stages with two big saves to deny Burnley before Tyrick Mitchell wrapped up the win deep into injury-time by sliding home on the overlap following an Eze assist on his comeback as Palace move into the top half, while the home side remain second bottom.

Fernandes saves United late

Scorers: Fernandes 90+1′

Manchester United needed a last minute winner from Bruno Fernandes to get back to winning ways and lift the pressure on Erik ten Hag after a 1-0 victory at Fulham.

The visitors looked to have taken an early lead but following a three-and-a-half minute VAR check, Scott McTominay’s opener was ruled out for a razor thin offside call against Harry Maguire in one of the only opportunities of a dull first half.

After the break, André Onana was called on to make some big saves following a quiet opening hour by denying Harry Wilson and João Palhinha in quick succession before Calvin Bassey had an attempt cleared off the line and Rodrigo Muniz headed just over as the home side upped the ante.

With the game seeming set for a stalemate, United captain Fernandes marked his 200th appearance with a low finish from just inside the area which Leno got a hand to but couldn’t prevent from creeping into the corner and win it at the death.

After two successive 3-0 losses, United now move up to sixth following the much-needed three points.
