Newcastle United and Burnley are both interested in a deal for Derby County midfielder Jason Knight this summer, a report from The Irish Examiner has claimed.

A graduate of Derby’s academy, Knight has made 80 appearances in all competitions for the Rams since making his senior debut in 2019, scoring nine goals.

The midfielder has also been capped seven times by the Republic of Ireland, and it now seems as though the 20-year-old is starting to attract attention from the Premier League, despite the injury he has suffered in pre-season following a collision with Derby manager Wayne Rooney in training.

According to this latest update, both Newcastle and Burnley are interested in a move for Knight, as they look to strengthen their squads for the current campaign.

With Derby currently having to work under a transfer embargo amid their financial issues, it has been suggested that the Rams may have to reluctantly sell Knight before the market closes.

As well as Newcastle and Burnley, it is also thought that the midfielder is the subject of interest from clubs outside of the UK this summer.

There are currently two years remaining on Knight’s contract with Derby, securing his future at Pride Park until the end of the 2022/23 season.

The Verdict

This is certainly an interesting one for Derby to consider over the next few weeks.

Given the lack of numbers they have in their squad at minute, it is hard to see them wanting to lose any more players this summer, particularly one as promising as Knight.

However, the status of Newcastle and Burnley as Premier League clubs, does mean they may have the financial strength to offer a rather significant fee to Derby for the signing of the midfielder.

Considering Derby are in a position where the financial windfall they could receive from that would surely be helpful for the Rams, this could certainly be one to keep an eye over the next few weeks.
