Newcastle United are not the only club interested in striking a deal for Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as the St James’ Park target also has suitors in Germany and Italy, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Eddie Howe was appointed as the Magpies’ head coach last November and, ahead of his first full season at the helm, could look to take advantage of the summer window.

What’s the latest news involving Schmeichel?

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle are tracking Schmeichel’s situation as Howe is keen to recruit a new first-choice shot-stopper.

The report suggests the 80-cap Denmark international could be a high-profile departure from Leicester as he is keen to enjoy regular European action.

While continental football would not currently be on offer at St James’ Park, due to Newcastle sitting adrift of the Premier League’s top seven, there appears to be a bright future on Tyneside.

That is because the Magpies became the richest club in world football after the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund completed a £305million takeover last October.

Schmeichel, meanwhile, is set to enter the final 12 months of his Leicester contract – which is worth £130,000-per-week – in the summer.

What has Dean Jones said about Schmeichel?

Jones believes Newcastle are not Schmeichel’s only admirer as overseas clubs are also mulling over whether to test Leicester’s resolve.

The transfer insider feels Brendan Rodgers’ side may be forced to cash-in on the 35-year-old when the summer window opens for business.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “His contract is starting to wind down and I think that there’s a possibility that he has offers coming in for him this summer. I think he might even have offers prepared for him right now.

“There are clubs, I’m told, in Germany and Italy that are keen on Kasper Schmeichel and they’ve got a feeling he might become available.

“We’ll have to wait and see how that plays out, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Leicester had to consider options for him in the summer.”

Why is Schmeichel of interest to Newcastle?

Leicester chief Rodgers has previously described Schmeichel as ‘outstanding’, underlining how Newcastle would secure a leading goalkeeper if they were to strike a deal.

The Dane has enjoyed plenty of success at the King Power Stadium, with him getting his hands on the Premier League title – along with the FA Cup, Community Shield and Championship crown – during his time on the Foxes’ books.

Schmeichel also offers plenty of Premier League experience thanks to featuring in the competition 282 times, so he would not take any time adjusting to the top flight if he were to head to St James’ Park.
