Newcastle United target Martin Terrier would be able to ‘play and perform at the highest level in the Premier League’, according to Ligue 1 expert Johnathan Johnson.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a switch away from Rennes in recent months following a string of impressive displays and could become the latest addition to Eddie Howe’s ongoing revolution.

Newcastle United transfer news – Martin Terrier

A recent report from 90min has claimed that almost half the Premier League has scouted Terrier ahead of potential moves in the upcoming winter transfer window.

It’s claimed that Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle are amongst the sides to have run the rule over the former France Under-21 international, while there is also reported interest from the Bundesliga and Serie A.

Terrier only put pen to paper on a new four-year contract worth £51,000-per-week back in August, yet that doesn’t appear to have deterred any of his potential suitors.

Rennes are said to value their prized asset at around £30 million and he could find himself at the centre of a fiercely contested transfer tussle.

What has Johnson said about Terrier?

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Johnson said: “I can understand why Newcastle would be taking a look at him. It’s my feeling that after this World Cup, he’ll probably start to play a bit of a role for the French national team as well.

“And obviously, after a fairly slow start to the season, he’s really started to get motoring in Ligue 1 as well. So, there is the possibility that they qualify for the Champions League between now and the end of the season, and obviously that would add a substantial amount to his price tag as well.

“But I think in terms of a fit, he would be able to play and perform at the highest level in the Premier League, but I do think probably needs a bit of consistent exposure to continental football.

“And that’s not something that Newcastle will be able to offer immediately. The assumption is that they will finish in the European places based on how they’re performing in the Premier League so far.”

Would Terrier be a good signing?

European football writer Tim Williams previously described Terrier as a: “very quick, left-sided right-footed attacking player whose trademark is coming in off the left flank and whipping shots in, a-la Thierry Henry.”

Terrier found the back of the net on 21 occasions in 46 outings in 2021/22, setting up his teammates a further seven times.

It’s clear that Terrier has the ability to become an astute acquisition for Newcastle should he arrive at St. James’ Park, adding further firepower to Howe’s frontline.
