Instant fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
‘What was the ref thinking blowing the whistle in the last minute and stopping a 4 3 victory that would have made history and given some sort of payback.
What a fool but what a game.’
The Armchair fan:
‘Where to start?! What a match!
I had a funny feeling we were going to nick it 4-3 in injury time to gain revenge for 96 and 97.
We played brilliantly and could have won.
Let’s take this momentum into Saturday, win the match and climb up that league table. Proud of the Toon tonight.’
Mark Jankowski:
‘A pulsating night under the lights, all that was missing was the winner which probably should have come, if not for some eager whistling from the ref at the end.
In all honesty, a couple of sloppy mistakes cost us what would have been a deserved win.
Salah showed his quality.
On a night where Lewis Hall kept him pretty quiet he still walked away with goals and an assist.
Let’s hope we can carry that level of performance forward.’
Billy Miller:
‘If we played the way we have against Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City against teams like West Ham and Palace, we’d be title contenders.
Fantastic performance and so unlucky not to win.
Had that been Liverpool breaking at the end, there is no way the ref is blowing the whistle.
Would have liked to see the penalty shout from a couple more angles. Looked a foul to me.
Spectacular game overall and our lads put in top performances across the pitch.
They’ll be disappointed but they should be proud too.
Keep that intensity up and we’ll hit a run of form.’
Nat Seaton:
‘What a game!!!
Best performance of the season and against the team sitting top of the league.
Everyone stepped up and played their part but I thought Isak was class tonight.
Gives you hope as to how we can be, hopefully good times ahead after this.
Well done lads.’
Bazoox:
‘A game that swung back and forth, that restores a lot of hope from our perspective.
It’s a fact that we raise our game against the Septics.
After falling behind for the first time in the proceedings, anyone could have been forgiven for thinking we’d blown it.
The team came out and proved that they are ready to fight for Eddie Howe.’
David Punton:
‘Great game for the neutral and a very good point against the league leaders.
With some better finishing and some better defending we’d have won that game.
We saw Isak score a stunner and then after Salah had done his damage, Fab Schar pops up to give us a late share of the spoils against a side which have just had wins over Man City and Real Madrid.
The Reds hitting the woodwork more than us, but oh for Gordon to have stuck that first half sitter away.
It was entertaining and frustrating.
There were penalty shouts, saves, and a ref who blew for full time when we had two on two on a break at the death.
Overall though, phew. Take a breath.
One of the games going into where you’d have definitely taken a point.
Our search for a win over Liverpool at SJP goes on. We haven’t beaten them on our patch since the 15/16 season.’
GToon:
‘Decent point all things considered but what on earth is the ref doing when he blew at the end with us attacking and about to have a chance to score.
He couldn’t blow quick enough.
When you think of the number of times they have defied the laws of time to win at the end and yet that ref does that.
Absolutely disgusting. Cheating. Nothing else but cheating.’
Matt Busby said to…:
‘What a game.
That was thoroughly entertaining, spoiled by Andy Madley’s disgraceful decision to blow for time when Isak and Wilson were bearing down on goal. We could have won!
That said, I think we saw the next Premier League champions this evening.
Liverpool are very good and to get into a winning position from 2-1 down at a raucous St James is no mean feat.
I wonder which version of Newcastle United we’ll see at Brentford though?
If it’s the one we saw tonight that’ll do for me.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘What a cracking game of football, two sides going for it.
3-3 being a fair result.’
Jamie Smith:
‘Bonus point that and no mistake, amazing how a game of football can break out when the opposition comes for one.
I’m not dwelling on leading twice and falling behind, a draw was probably a fair result on balance and both result and performance were an improvement on recent standards.
Isak very good and Tonali outstanding again.
Now to hope for a bit of consistency in the approach to Christmas.’
