Eric Dier and Sergio Reguilón were quick to react when they spotted a fan had collapsed in the stands during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Play was suspended shortly before half-time after it became apparent the fan was in urgent need of medical attention.

There were some distressing scenes as medical staff rushed across the pitch to assist.

He received medical care and attention from paramedics before being taken to a local hospital for further treatment.

But the club confirmed that the fan is in a stable condition before play eventually resumed.

Spurs went on to win 3-2 thanks to goals apiece from Harry Kane, Tanguy Ndombele and Heung-min Son, but their celebrations were understandably muted in the aftermath of the incident.

Reguilón, who was named joint-Man of the Match with Dier after their swift actions during the incident in the first half, spoke to the media after the game where he explained exactly what he saw in the stand at St James' Park.

"I saw one guy lying down and one man doing like this [gestures with his hands]," Reguilon told Sky Sports.

"I was very nervous. I went to the referee and said 'look at this, stop the match', and the referee and the linesman looked there and stopped the match.

The reporter interjected: "We hear he's in a stable condition, yes."

To which Reguilon added: "That's more important than everything, that's more important."

England star Harry Kane praised Dier and Reguilon after the game for alerting the medics.

When asked if the players knew how important it was to react as quickly as they did, Kane replied: "I think from our point of view, we know that they have the defibs [sic] on the side of the bench.

"Obviously we don't know if they have the defibs in the crowd, I think Eric even said, just run over and see if they have one.
