Matt Targett‘s potential permanent move to Newcastle could be in doubt, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The left-back is currently on loan with the Toon Army and has been strongly linked with a permanent deal following his impressive form at St James’ Park.

What’s the latest news involving Targett?

Having established himself as Eddie Howe’s first choice left-back since he made the January switch from Aston Villa, a permanent move to Newcastle has looked on the cards for some time.

Transfer insider Dean Jones told GiveMeSport that the former Fulham and Southampton defender was the Magpies’ number one transfer target this summer, with Downie also previously saying he ‘fully expected‘ them to reach an agreement of £15.3m for his services this summer.

Furthermore, the Chronicle Live reported last month that Newcastle have an option to sign Targett on a permanent basis and have already agreed a fee with Steven Gerrard’s side.

Targett is out of favour at Villa having lost his place to January arrival Lucas Digne, but in a fresh twist, Downie now believes there’s “noises” around the deal that could see Newcastle miss out on the 26-year-old.

What did Downie say about Targett?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “There’s a few noises around the Targett thing that make me think it might not happen, unless there’s a very clever game being played, there’s a few noises that raise a couple of question marks to whether that one is going to happen or not.”

Who else has been linked with Targett?

Having proved himself as an extremely reliable full-back across a number of seasons at Premier League level, Targett isn’t short of potential buyers this summer.

While Newcastle are still hoping to complete a permanent deal, according to 90min, three other top-flight sides are hoping to offer Targett a route out of Villa Park. The report says that Leicester, Leeds, and Wolves are all interested, although a switch to the North East is the favourable outcome.

It also states that Howe has been extremely impressed with Targett’s form since he arrived in January and is said to be the ‘driving force’ behind Newcastle’s pursuit of his permanent services, which could give the Toon Army the edge in this potential deal.
